How to register with Ofsted

As a nanny working in somebody’s home there’s no legal requirement to register with Ofsted. But you may choose to register as it could help to increase your professional status.

Once you’re registered with Ofsted, employers can pay you using Childcare Vouchers, which is a tax-efficient way of paying for childcare. Or by using the new Tax-Free Childcare scheme.

If your employer asks you to register with Ofsted it’s good practice for the employer to pay for or contribute towards the costs of registration.

As you don’t have to register, your registration will be voluntary and you register as a ‘Home childcarer’.

How to register

It currently costs £103 to apply and that fee includes a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

To register you’ll need to have:

• Public liability insurance
• A certificate in paediatric first aid approved by your local authority which will have to be updated every three years.
• Completed a Caring for Children in their Own Home course or have an appropriate qualification at a minimum of level 2. Your local authority can advise on pre-registration training courses.
